Junior Sous Chef

Located at the end of a hidden alleyway on the Lower East Side, Freemans is a longstanding New York City restaurant known for its rustic, early American-inspired cuisine and warm, tavern-like atmosphere. Since opening in 2004, Freemans has built a reputation for simple, thoughtful cooking rooted in seasonal ingredients and Old World traditions. As we continue to evolve and reimagine this iconic space, we are seeking a driven and talented Junior Sous Chef to join our leadership team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated cook ready to take the next step—someone who is eager to contribute creatively, lead from the front, and grow within a collaborative and ambitious kitchen. While this is not currently a full management position, there is potential for growth.

Position Summary

The Junior Sous Chef plays a key role in leading and expediting dinner service, ensuring seamless communication between the kitchen and front of house. This position is responsible for maintaining consistency, accuracy, and high standards of execution during service, with a sharp focus on timing, organization, and plate quality. Working closely with the Chef Team, the Junior Sous Chef sets the pace of the line, troubleshoots in real time, and ensures every dish leaving the kitchen meets the restaurant’s standards. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring composure, attention to detail, and the ability to perform at a high level under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and expedite dinner service five nights per week
  • Uphold the highest standards of food quality, consistency, and presentation
  • Perform daily line checks and ensure readiness for service
  • Assist in inventory management, ordering, and controlling waste
  • Collaborate on seasonal menu development and new dish execution
  • Maintain full compliance with NYC Department of Health standards
  • Foster a positive, professional kitchen culture through clear communication and leadership

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership role in a high-volume, quality-driven kitchen
  • Strong foundation in culinary technique, with an interest in New American cuisine
  • Proven ability to lead a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Highly organized with strong attention to detail
  • Professional, dependable, and team-oriented
  • Spanish language skills preferred
